Contribution to the ICRC for the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan

Liechtenstein is supporting the aid program of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Afghanistan with a contribution of CHF 100,000.

Afghanistan has been characterized by armed conflict for decades. Since the Taliban took power in August 2021, the human rights and humanitarian situation has deteriorated significantly. The UN estimates that 23.7 million people - over half of Afghanistan's population - will be dependent on humanitarian assistance in 2024. Afghanistan is still one of the biggest humanitarian crises, but is no longer as widely recognized by the public. Severe flooding, such as recently in March 2024, repeatedly leads to displacement and the destruction of livelihoods.

In Afghanistan, the ICRC is committed to protecting people affected by violence and strengthening their right to access basic goods and services. It supports health facilities and strengthens water and sanitation services. The ICRC also works to improve the conditions of detention of prisoners and to promote the acceptance and support of international humanitarian law.
